About Breast Implants

Breast augmentation may be one of the most popular cosmetic breast procedures among women,
but this has also led to the rise of breast implant removal surgery.
Breast implants are not meant to be permanent, anyway, although they can last for more than 10 years.

Here are ten facts about breast implant removal to help you understand what this procedure entails:

breast implant removal variety of reasons

Women remove breast implants for a variety of reasons.

Some people think that breast implant removal is only done if you develop implant complications, like rupture, folding, or deflation.

But in reality, you can have your implants removed just because you want to. Maybe you feel that you got the wrong shape and size of implants. Or maybe your implants no longer look good after some time.

Whatever your reason is, you can ask your plastic surgeon to remove your breast implants anytime.

breast implant removal surgery

Breast implant removal is a short surgery.

In fact, it doesn’t take more than an hour to remove your breast implants.

You don’t need to be confined in a hospital or surgical center for this, as most implants can be taken out in a plastic surgeon’s office using local anesthesia.

There’s also very minimal pain, if there is at all. You’ll experience a bit of discomfort, but it can be easily managed by taking pain relievers.

breast capsule implant removal

The capsule doesn’t always have to be removed.

The breast capsule is the scar that forms around the implant. People often think that this should be removed as well during breast implant removal.

But the truth is, capsules don’t need to be removed if the thickness is considered normal. It will eventually decrease in size all on its own once the implants have been removed.

Capsules have to be taken out in case of capsular contracture, which is a breast augmentation complication that occurs when the scar tissue squeeze the implants too much, causing your breasts to become hard, painful, and distorted.

breast implant removal incisions

The same breast augmentation incisions may be used to remove your breast implants.

You don’t have to worry about getting new scars because your plastic surgeon will likely use the same incisions as your original procedure to extract your breast implants.

Since the incision is going to be a fresh wound once again, make sure that you avoid exposing it to sunlight and UV rays. It may take up to a year to soften and lighten your scars.

breast implant removal breast lift

Breast implant removal can be combined with a breast lift.

You can opt to undergo a breast lift together with breast implant removal if the skin on your breasts is left stretched and saggy.

A breast lift will remove excess skin and tighten your breast tissues to provide better support. But take note that it will result in more extensive scarring, depending on the breast lift technique involved.

saline breast implant removal deflation

You may not need surgery to remove saline breast implants.

If your breast implants are saline, you can simply ask your plastic surgeon to deflate them. You don’t need surgery anymore since your body will safely absorb the implant bag made of saline solution.

Deflating a saline implant is usually done before getting a breast lift, as this will determine if you have enough excess skin to be a viable candidate for a breast lift.

breast implant removal recovery downtime

Breast implant removal recovery has virtually no downtime.

During breast implant removal, your chest muscles aren’t disturbed, so you don’t have to recover for a long time.

You may experience some discomfort, but the pain usually doesn’t last for more than 24 hours if capsules aren’t removed. You may also return to work the next day, as long as you don’t do any heavy lifting and strenuous activities.

Of course, recovery time increases if combined with other procedures. You can expect to recover in about a week if there’s capsular extraction, and about two weeks if combined with a breast lift.

misshapen breasts after implant removal

Your breasts will be misshapen right after the procedure.

Don’t be scared if you notice that your breasts look deflated and aa bit caved-in immediately after the surgery. That’s perfectly normal.

It takes about two to four weeks for your breasts to improve in shape and fluff back out. Your breasts will eventually regain around 10% to 15% of their original volume.

But take note that your boobs will not look the same as they did before you had implants. Implants can cause rib changes and stretch out your breast tissue, so your breasts won’t look the same as your original boobs.

breast implants back after removal

You can get implants again after removal.

If you suddenly have a change of heart and realize that you want to get breast implants again, you may do so as long as you’re in good health and shape.

In fact, some women remove implants before pregnancy and then put them back once they’re done breastfeeding. Others simply want to get smaller implants.

implants removal plastic surgeon

You can choose another plastic surgeon to do breast implant removal.

You don’t have to go back to your original plastic surgeon to have your implants removed. This is only advisable if you developed complications stemming from your breast augmentation surgery.

But if you want to remove your implants for personal reasons, you can see a different plastic surgeon to help you out.
Just make sure that you deal with a reputable, experienced, and board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure your safety.
